Gardens By The Bay Christmas Wonderland 2015

Christmas in the world’s only shopping mall with a seat on the UN is, predictably enough, a very mall-oriented affair. That is, a good chunk of the season’s decor is to be found along the shopping stretch and at the numerous malls around Singapore.

Christmas on a Great Street

The first is, of course, Orchard Road and the return of its annual Christmas on a Great Street campaign. This would be a hot favorite amongst tourists, with decorations lining the shopping street proper and all the other malls participating with decorations of their own. All that with the appropriate festive sales, of course.

On Orchard, a noteworthy mall is found in ION Orchard, with its glittering facade and upscale stores. It is a photographic staple of the area. This year, its large walk-in Christmas tree is sponsored by Swarovski.

Foam Snow, because there is no snow in the tropics

Tanglin Mall is another that has an annual Christmas setup, complete with foam “snow” machines. It is often thronged by families, with children squealing and screaming over the mysterious foam which simulates upwards-blowing snow flurries. The kids love it, however.

The newly minted Orchard Gateway is in with the other boys on the block 313@Somerset and Orchard Central, with icicles and glittering lights. These are also favorite selfie targets along the stretch, further bogging down an already lively walkway.

Rain, being another of Singapore’s tropical Christmas regulars, assists in further bogging down the experience while yielding additional opportunities to enjoy the reflections of the lights off the now also glittering pavement.

Now being done with the main shopping cluster, the pleasure island cluster of VivoCity and Resorts World Sentosa are definitely not to be missed. VivoCity features its signature massive Christmas tree, which plays music and strobes its lights similarly to the Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay. Incidentally, the first song it plays in the sequence is inexplicably the Star Wars opening theme.

Access to Resorts World Sentosa is actually free for those who choose to walk in, which makes it a great route going along the boardwalk from VivoCity right up to Sentosa proper and walking up past the Merlion and the Beach Station for the monorail. This would help one cover a majority of the larger decorations. That, and a remarkably garishly lit Merlion.

One should also pop by the Universal Studios, which has gone full Christmas.

Of course, this also being around the release of the new movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Changi Airport is in on the action with a bizarre melange of Star Wars imagery alongside its Christmasy trappings.

Star Wars plushies as ornaments. Bizarre.

This post being longer than is appropriate, I leave you with labeled pictures of malls and their shinies. Again, Merry Christmas one and all. Sadly, it’s a bit late for Hanukkah.
